Clay, for me, is the most honest of materials. It holds the mark of the maker and carries the memory of the earth it came from.
These pieces were made for Vessel, a collaborative exhibition with painters Rhiannon Power and Mathew Godwin at the Garage Gallery, Mullumbimby, in April 2026. It was a joy to share them in the gallery, and I am proud to bring the remaining pieces from the exhibition here, where they can find their forever homes.
Made from two clay bodies - one rich and textured, the other refined and smooth - most are left unglazed, allowing the clay to tell its own story, while others carry a minimal glaze that pools and settles into the texture, lending an earthy, organic quality. Texture, tone and form are the only decoration. Each piece was made with the same intention - to create a form that is complete in itself.
Several of the open forms have been planted with indigenous species by local plant specialist Lani Jensen, referencing the Japanese tradition of Kusamono, in which plants are displayed in vessels as living works of art.
I am endlessly inspired by the beauty of Bundjalung Country, where I live and work. The organic shapes, the earthy tones, the simplicity of form - these are my attempt to pay homage to this land and the community it holds.
Making is where I find calm. My hope is that these pieces carry that feeling with them, and offer an invitation to pause, and simply be.
